Gender equity is a core element of democracy. Yet many societies in the Western Balkans lack adequate political representation of women or their concerns. Despite decades of commitment, equal rights and opportunities for all genders still have to be fought for or defended. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation promotes equality for women in the countries of the region and provides them with concrete support in their demands for adequate participation in the political process.

FNF and German-Kosovar Business Association stand up for women’s rights
The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) in cooperation with the German-Kosovar Business Association (OEGJK/KDWV) recently published an analysis called “Challenges of Accessing the Labor Market – Middle-Aged Women in Kosovo”. Sustainably addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that involves policy interventions, societal shifts in attitudes towards gender roles, investment in education and training, provision of support services for working parents, and promotion of women’s entrepreneurship and leadership opportunities.

Empowering Istrian women to empower themselves
The Women’s Club of the liberal party „Istrian Democratic Assembly“ (IDS), established as official body of the party in 2013, organized a workshop to consider how the members can actively work to improve the situation for Istrian women. It was only fitting that the meeting was held during the start of the Carnival season, when symbolically everybody puts his or her old behavioural patterns and roles behind, striving to reach new goals and to set new frontiers. So did the Women’s Club.

The series of human-interest stories portrays strong women who positively defy antagonistic social conditions that principally still favour men. Our short documentaries introduce female change-makers and their commitment to social issues, who at the same time inspire fellow women to thrive and be successful even in adverse environments. Finally yet importantly, they convey a progressive picture of Western Balkan societies that the rest of Europe is not well aware of.
