The Madrid office seeks to strengthen cooperation and political dialogue between representatives from political parties, scientific institutions and civil society organisations from Spain, Italy, Portugal, Germany and the European sphere. We are committed to help contribute to solutions to specific regional challenges in Southern Europe and highlight best practices from this ever more important region for the European integration process. It also seeks to develop a new approach to interregional cooperation in the Mediterranean. With partner organisations, we are developing a liberal approach to geostrategic demands and opportunities in the Mare Nostrum.

Inflationary wave in the Mediterranean
The current inflationary trend is the result of a combination of factors such as production bottlenecks after the pandemic, the post-Covid rush for recovery and, above all, the war in Ukraine. Europe, the US and the various countries of the Mediterranean basin are proving unable to control this historic escalation in energy supply prices. Ukraine's continued sophisticated rearmament foreshadows a long war and long-lasting inflation, where transitional anti-crisis measures will be of little use in surfing the wave.

The participation of women in the different spheres of political power has increased notably in Spain in recent years. Legislation in Spain intents to promote female representation, e.g. one of the laws which advocate equality between men and women, states, "The achievement of real and effective equality in our society requires not only the commitment of public subjects, but also their decisive impetus in the orbit of relations between individuals".

Roundtable on Russia´s strategy in the Med
A day before the historic NATO summit in Madrid, FNF Madrid hosted a round-table debate on Russia´s strategy in the Mediterranean with well-respected experts from the military, think tanks, government institutions and civil society. The participants agreed early on that to talk about a “Southern” and an “Eastern flank” of NATO wouldn’t do justice to the challenges at hand.

Earlier this month, we had an important visitor from Germany, Mr. Manfred Richter. The long-time member of the board of directors and treasurer of FNF visited the FNF office and met with some of our partners, including the liberal Ciudadanos group in the Spanish congress.

The European Year of Youth for young people in Southern Europe

With this eloquent sentence, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen questioned in the last State of the Union Address (SOTEU) of 2021 how the European Union of the future could be shaped without the collaboration and involvement of Europe's youth.
