Needrup Zangpo

Needrup Zangpo has a BA (Honours) in English and Indian Literature from Sherubtse College, Kanglung. In addition, he has completed several other professional courses in the area of journalism. He has worked as an Executive Director for the Journalists Association of Bhutan and is the current Executive Director of Bhutan Media Foundation. He has served as Chief Editor, Managing Editor, Deputy Director, and Assistant Research Officer with several Bhutanese newspapers. He was also an Adjunct Lecturer at the Royal Thimphu College. Needrup Zangpo is a Board Trustee for the Centre for Research on Bhutanese Society.

Bhutan chooses experience over change
In the fourth general election held on January 9, 2024, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Bhutan’s oldest political party, returned to power for the second time in the country’s 15-year history of democracy. PDP clinched a convincing win by securing 30 out of 47 seats in the National Assembly. Bhutan Tendrel Party (BTP), the newest party in the race, was able to garner 17 seats. A party needs to secure 24 seats to form the government.

Bhutan’s National Council Election 2023: A setback for women
At the recent National Council (NC) election held on 20th April in Bhutan, only one woman was elected to the 25-member Chamber of Parliament. The result was particularly surprising because women voters outnumbered men in the election.
