MALAYSIA’S PERSPECTIVE ON THE INDO-PACIFIC
This policy paper identifies and highlights relevant actions and strategies enacted by Malaysia through bilateral and multilateral platforms. These include the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the group of former British colonies of the Commonwealth, the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) and the loosely formed Five Power Defence Arrangements (FPDA) between Australia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. The latter was bu- ilt upon the Anglo-Malayan Defence Agreement, which was signed on 12 October 1957 and was subsequently replaced by the FPDA. This defence arrangement was agreed on after Britain’s commitment to cease military activities east of the Suez Canal. Malaysia had to rethink its strategic defence and security policies to compensate for the British protection.

Malaysia Outlook Conference 2023
The Malaysia Outlook Conference (MOC) is a platform for researchers, businesses, experts, and policymakers to come together to discuss and debate national public policies toward creating a better Malaysia while treading uncertainties in the new year. This year, MOC will again gather more than 100 experts. Hosted by IDEAS Malaysia since 2021, it has a strong following among policymakers, policy analysts, economists, civil society, and academics, as a platform to engage in robust discussions on issues.

Anwar Ibrahim’s first 100 days in office
Germany´s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier visits Malaysia. He will meet Anwar Ibrahim, the new Prime Minister. Mr. Anwar leads a broad coalition, which includes previous arch-rivals. He spent 25 years in opposition, ten of them in jail due to politically moticated convictions. As Prime Minister, Mr. Anwar has to strike a delicate balance to secure his and his government’s positions. Perception towards Liberalism in Malaysia 2016-2021
As a whole, liberalism as a word has not reached a wider proportion of the community as only half of the respondents have heard about the term itself. There are no significant changes in this aspect for the past five years as the percentage of the population who have heard about liberalism sustained around 50% except for year 2018 when the percentage of people who have heard of liberalism was at its highest (61%).
