EU Mission in Armenia and Russia
The European Union with its newly created foreign policy instrument, the EU monitoring mission in Armenia, aims at monitoring the conflictive situation on the borderline between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Russia perceives this mission as a competition and a danger to its interests. The situation has become tense since Russian border guard units are located on the territory of Armenia on the same border the EU mission is monitoring. What problems occur on the ground, why, where, and how can they be solved?
Harsh election campaign: Does Europe have to fear a Slovak Orbán?
Violence, hate speech and fights accompany the last phase of the election campaign of the snap parliamentary elections in Slovakia. The focus of the election campaign is on the alleged biggest threats to Slovakia: progressivism, liberalism, LGBT and gender ideology, illegal migration, the USA, Brussels, Soros NGOs, the media and so on. Role models are being sought in Poland, in Hungary and even in Russia. Will Slovakia ultimately continue its pro-Western course or fall prey to populism and pro-Russian propaganda?

Women's Rights on the Rise in Latin America
Last week, the Mexican Supreme Court delivered a groundbreaking verdict: the decriminalization of abortion across the country. Abortions in Mexico are now safe and legal in all public health facilities. Mexico's ruling is another success in the brave struggle for human and women's rights on the continent and could now have a ripple effect on other Latin American countries like Brazil or Chile.
Human Rights Defenders: Journalists
The UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders was adopted 25 years ago. The third edition of the publication "Human Rights Defenders" portrays media professionals who often accept personal threats to expose injustice and thus become human rights defenders in their home countries. „Our freedom, too, is only as secure as we ourselves are willing to stand up for it. Freedom of media and opinion was, is and will remain a definite indicator of how free the people in a country really are", says Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, Deputy Chairwoman.

In Taiwan’s upcoming presidential election, the ruling liberal Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has nominated the current Vice President William Ching-te Lai as their candidate. Lai has had a remarkable political career that included both triumphs and controversies. While his adversaries will mainly focus on his previous stance on Taiwan Independence, his real challenge might be to get traditional DPP voters on board: women, young people and the queer community.

For years, Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has been fighting for a free Belarus from exile in Lithuania and called for new elections after the rigged presidential elections. In the 17th Berlin Freedom Speech, she made a vehement plea for freedom and human rights and appealed to the international community for solidarity with the Belarusian opposition. For Tsikhanouskaya, it is clear that the fight for freedom is a global struggle that cannot be won alone.
