Vietnam's East Sea Strategy - Balancing Sovereignty and Stability

The South China Sea is the scene of international tensions, particularly due to China's disputed claim to 90% of these waters. Vietnam thus faces economic challenges from China's aggressive actions. Our analysis sheds light on Vietnam's strategic plan to maintain sovereignty, promote peace and seek alliances with Germany and the EU.

THE EUROPEAN DREAM: MOLDOVA’S WAY INTO THE EUROPEAN UNION

The war in Ukraine triggered a historic change on the EU's eastern border and the EU’s calculus about the costs and benefits of admitting new members among its midst. Apart from Ukraine, the most hopeful EU aspirant is the Republic of Moldova. Albeit being a small country with seemingly limited power to affect global politics, Moldova’s accession is of geopolitical importance to the EU. The summit of the European Political Community, held in the Moldovan capital in June 2023, accentuated this and aimed at sending a clear message to Russia: Moldova is part of the European family. Moreover, the European Commission recently issued a strong recommendation to open EU accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova, which was echoed by the European Council during its meeting on December 15. This analysis explores the challenges that Moldova has to face in order to become an official member of the Union and provides possible approaches on how to overcome them.

Find out exactly how they do it in our Policy Paper.

Regional energy security - Lessons Learned from the Russian war in Ukraine

Energy security is a key factor in Ukraine's and Europe's resilience to Russian aggression. Cutting the energy supply is a core element of Russian offensive tactics - on the one hand, to demoralise Ukraine, and on the other, to break the West's unity in supporting Ukrainian consumer protests. How could the energy supply be restored and secured in the shortest possible time?

Pakistan's Parallel Foreign Exchange Market

The hundi/hawala network functions as an informal foreign exchange market through a network of hawala brokers located in various regions. These brokers offer more affordable and convenient services, primarily catering to the blue-collar Pakistani workforce, redirecting remittances away from official channels. Although this network poses regulatory challenges, exchange companies find it exceedingly challenging to sever their ties with the hawala network.

Integration and Democratisation of the Western Balkans: The Challenges Ahead

The analysis identifies and discusses the key negative trends present in the region that all pose a principal challenge to democracy in the Western Balkans. The overview departs from domestic democratic deficits within political institutions, civil society, and media. Second, it discusses two problems of regional scope: unresolved disputes within and between states, and massive Westward migration. The analysis concludes with the broader geopolitical aspects and foreign influences that negatively affect the quality of democracy in the region, including Russian destabilizing influence, Chinese geoeconomics ambitions, and the EU’s loss of credibility.
