Rule of law
18.05.2023 Irina Burgaza

The Ups And Downs of the Mexican Criminal Justice System

According to their latest report, Mexico has seen a reduction of the national impunity rate, from 94.8% in 2020 to 91.8%. However, with this rate still surpassing the 90%, can we consider ourselves in a position to celebrate small victories? It is true that impunity exists even in the most effective justice systems, but the levels and conditions that allow it are what differentiate between a strong rule of law and a fragile one.

The Rise of China?

French President Macron and EU Commission President Von Der Leyen have arrived in Beijing for a three-day state visit. Together they want to convince China's head of state Xi Jinping to use his influence on Russian President Putin to achieve a peace solution in Ukraine. The Russian war of aggression shows that modern conventional warfare can be long and difficult even for a great power. But that does not stop Jinping from stepping up his rhetoric towards his neighbours Taiwan.

EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA)

This paper analyzes typical features of the "new generation" FTA as they are concretized in the EVFTA. It then identifies the unprecedented opportunities that these “new-generation” commitments promise to bring to Vietnam and evaluates the costs that Vietnam has to pay for such a promising future. It seems that all these potential impacts from the EVFTA are indispensable for Vietnam to move forward in a changing world.

The New West

Russia’s brutal war of aggression against Ukraine has profoundly changed the global political situation. Fundamentally new conditions for political decision-making have emerged all
over the world. Hope for a peaceful Europe has been shaken.
The value-based Western model – which combines open societies, free markets, democracy, the rule of law, and human rights – has experienced multiple crises since the fall of the
Berlin Wall in 1989. None, however, compares to today’s challenge to this “Western model of democracy”
