Quo Vadis LGBTQ+ Representation in Politics?

On the International Day against Homophobia, Bi-, Inter- and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), people around the world commemorate 17 May 1990, the day on which homosexuality was removed from the ICD-10 diagnosis code of the World Health Organisation (WHO) and was officially no longer considered a disease. We talk with Carline van Breugel about the lived reality of the LGBTQ+ community in Europe today and the lack of representation in politics.

Voices from Israel: Regional Impact of the Russian War in Ukraine

On February 24, 2022, the invasion of Ukraine ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin began. The actions of the State of Israel since then have been like walking a tightrope: On the one hand, it has joined a condemnation of Russia's actions by the United Nations General Assembly; on the other, it has not joined Western sanctions. It provides humanitarian aid but excludes arms deliveries.

“Putin‘s ideology is the sacralisation of war“

What the Russian head of state is doing can be seen with horror in the news every day: The acts of violence in Butcha and Borodyanka shock the world. What is going on in the mind of the former KGB spy in the Kremlin? Why has Russian strongman Vladimir Putin invaded Ukraine now, of all times, and is demanding the impossible from the West? Philosopher Michel Eltchaninoff has analyzed the background of Putin's thinking and the ideology he has developed.

Melitopol: the first days of war

An eyewitness, who wishes to remain anonymous, reports on the Russian attack on Melitopol. She describes how people left the city and how the territorial defense groups tried to stop the Russian troops. But after the occupiers entered the city, a humanitarian disaster began: looting occurred, food became scarce, and people were kidnapped. The soldiers forcibly threw people into carts and drove them out of the city. Some of them returned, others to this day have not.

Defending what is right

Georgian politician and civic mover and shaker Tinatin Khidasheli has been immersed in the fight for justice for 30 years – and is ready for the next 30 to come. Tinatin is the type of person for whom the use of “fighter” in the expression “freedom fighter” is well deserved. In her three decades of civic activism, she has gone from clashing with the Soviet-era militsiya (police) in the final year before the fall of the USSR to defending in court the basic rights of those ostracised by the new Georgian state, from advocating the need for EU integration of her country in Parliament, to reforming its military.
