Iniciativa Liberal
Portugal
19.06.2023 Rui Rocha Odilia Abreu

"Liberalism for All"

In Portugal, the center left Partido Socialista party has ruled for many years. But new forces are also changing the political landscape: founded only in 2017, the liberal party "Iniciativa Liberal" has managed to increase the number of its parliamentary seats from one to eight in only its second attempt. The party has taken up the cause of urgently needed economic reforms and de-bureaucratization. Rui Rocha, President of Iniciativa Liberal, talks in an interview about the key factors behind this rise.

Francis Fukuyama
Liberalismus
05.12.2022 Alexander Görlach

"Liberalism needs Democracy"

The famous US political scientist Francis Fukuyama explains in an interview with freiheit.org why populists and nationalists will fail. The political leaders in these countries are transfiguring the past in a nationalistic nostalgia and not providing adequate solutions. How liberal is our international order? Why are we witnessing a new upsurge of anti-liberal forces right now? Even if there is no automatism for liberal democracy, it is still worth fighting for. Its foundation of human and moral truth , that all people have a minimum of freedom, that they are respected and treated fairly, is universal.

Although no longer united by common membership of the EU, the ties between Britain and Germany remain strong. Sir Graham Watson talks about post-Brexit security cooperation between the UK and the EU in the face of Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, possible solutions to rising energy prices and the future of the UK-Germany relationship.

For Nino Bolkvadze, a lawyer, an LGBTI activist, and the first openly lesbian individual running for office in the history of Georgia, the meaning of the rainbow flag – a life in colour and joy – became clear when she came out publicly on Georgian national television in 2015. Married at 16, and now a successful lawyer with two grown children, it took Nino 20 years to accept herself.
