Politics of Economic Reforms: Real Lessons from 1991

July 2021 marks the 30th anniversary of the economic liberalization in India. The liberalization began in 1991, with Dr. Manmohan Singh as the then-Finance Minister in the Congress-led coalition government headed by Mr. P.V. Narasimha Rao.

Old Problems and No Solution

Today, the European Commission will publish its annual Rule of Law Report, in which it systematically examines the separation of powers, media diversity and the independence of the judiciary in all 27 EU countries. The new report could deepen existing conflicts. So far, however, there have been no consequences from the ranking.

The flame of freedom burns brighter than ever

The largest protests since 1994 are currently taking place in Cuba. Thousands protested against the growing plight of the population, which was exacerbated by the pandemic. However, the government blames the rest of the world and reacted with severe repression against the demonstrators. Could this mean the end of the Cuban dictatorship?

CO2 Border Adjustment: How is the EU Going to Save the Climate?

On 14 July, EU Vice-President Frans Timmermans presented a comprehensive package of proposals to implement climate policy in the EU. Entitled "Fit for 55", the package contains 13 laws to help achieve the Union's climate goals. What does the package include, what can be expected on the implementation track, and can the timetable be kept?

The World Health Organisation says vaccination is one of the most affordable health solutions

The World Health Organisation has stated that vaccination is one of the most cost-effective health interventions available. Efficient vaccination programmes provide protection and save millions of people from illness, disability and death; however, they also have the power to control and even eradicate disease.

Trans in Romania

This report describes, through multiple research methods, how the lives of trans people in Romania have been affected by discrimination in a multitude of contexts: family, professional, medical, legal, bureaucratic. It also brings us closer to trans people’s lives, very different from each other, but striving for the same thing: for their identity to be accepted and respected in society.

Online Censorship in Russia and Turkey

Russia and Turkey have been cracking down on social media in their crusade against free speech and journalism. Both countries seek to get social media platforms to comply with government requests or punish journalists if they cannot stop them from posting. A new publication by the Friedrich-Naumann-Foundation assesses the current situation in both countries.

Warschauer Pakt
Warsaw Pact
01.07.2021 Dr. Detmar Doering

A historic mission is accomplished

On July 1, 1991, the Warsaw Pact was dissolved in Prague. It was not only the end point, but also the beginning of a development. For most politicians who helped to overthrow communism in 1989, joining NATO was the consequence of the end of the Warsaw Pact. To this day, however, not all countries have succeeded in doing so. The geostrategic dangers for Central Europe are far from being averted.

Lessons from Bhutan: The Bhutanese Economy and the Private Sector

The Bhutanese economy commercialized only after 1961 when the first development plan began. Prior to that, it was a small and scattered population relying heavily on subsistence agriculture. The little trade that existed was bartering and exchange of surpluses within communities. Records show that external trade with Tibet in the north and the Indian state of West Bengal existed.

From independence to Europe. What comes next?

In recent years, the Foundation for Freedom has commemorated the "peaceful revolutions of freedom" thirty years ago in numerous events and publications, which found perhaps their most emblematic expression in German reunification. However, this revolutionary democratic change did not extend to the entire continent. Particularly the countries of the former Yugoslavia suffered from excesses of violence.
