War in Europe

The virtual front

There are soldiers in uniform, carrying and using weapons with deadly impact. And there are “information soldiers”, using their sophisticated IT skills to undermine the Russian war effort in Ukraine and strengthen morale among the attacked. Some 300,000 Ukrainians have by now joined their ranks. Together, they form the Information Army of Ukrainian resistance.

War in Europe: The Role of Turkey

Turkey has established itself as a mediator in the Ukraine conflict and Erdogan has repeatedly emphasized that he does not want to give up either partner. The next few weeks will not only show what place the country will find in a changed European security order, but also whether the current position of balancing offers opportunities for conflict management, or whether Turkey will be doomed.

Cryptocurrencies and the war in Ukraine

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the reaction of the international community affects almost all sectors of the economy. Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are therefore also affected. In the first few days since the Russian war of aggression began, Ukraine has received crypto donations in the millions. At the same time, observers fear that oligarchs will use cryptocurrencies to circumvent the sanctions. But it´s not that simple.

Viktor Orbán’s Close Ties to Putin’s Russia Have Become Increasingly Dangerous for Him

Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has long played with the thought of connecting to the East. Long before the war in Ukraine, Hungary's proximity to Russia provoked the EU. Orbán's Putin-friendly attitude could become a problem even in his own country. For the first time since 2010, the opposition stands a chance against the Prime Minister and his Fidesz party.

Macron

Five years of Macron - good numbers, bad mood

Emmanuel Macron started out as a dynamic hopeful with a liberal profile, beyond left and right. He wanted to advance Europe, strengthen the French Republic and democracy, eliminate social deficits, reform outdated socio-political laws and make the economy (more) competitive. He won many allies, especially in the centre of the political spectrum, but also in conservative and left-leaning camps.

The challenge of a U-shaped recovery

The geo-economy of the Mediterranean is composed of a disparity in the wealth of its nations and in the level of their development, with the countries on the northern shore being the most fortunate, apart from some countries bordering to the east.

“Brother Putin”

A currently rather rare picture: while millions of people around the world are condemning Putin’s brutal war in numerous demonstrations and expressing their solidarity with the Ukrainian people who are struggling for their lives, the illegal campaign has met with enthusiastic public approval in Belgrade.

Stable, Italian conditions

Time to take stock: The Draghi government has been in office for a year - and will probably remain so until the end of the legislative period in 2023. That's good news for Europe. Even if the Italian Republic is not in as bad a position in many areas as it often makes itself (and the German press) out to be - news about a country in crisis mode is something one is used to from Italy.

2014 and Now: Will Sanctions Change Putin’s Calculations?

Russia is under unprecedented economic pressure after invading Ukraine. After years of life in a growing, globally connected economy, Russians find themselves in a country increasingly unplugged from the world.
