Freedom of Expression and Democracy

Freedom of expression and democracy have an unquestionable intrinsic relationship. Freedom of expression stems from the autonomy of thought and conscience, that is, from the possibility that every person has to assume his or her own ideas, share them and use them for personal, family or social development. What are the consequences of the weakening or loss of freedom of expression?

Armenia and Azerbaijan are restarting peace negotiations

In the shadows of the war in Ukraine, for the first time after the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan in 2020, the talks between the two archenemies are gaining momentum. While peace and stability in South Caucasus is highly desirable, the prospects of relation-building between Armenia and Azerbaijan remain uncertain because of the existing geopolitical situation.

Putin on trial!

In Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine, there is now a plethora of international and national institutions and organisations trying to sift through and collect evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger and Gerhart Baum have also filed criminal charges against Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin with the Federal Prosecutor General in Karlsruhe.

The Greek minority in Ukraine

According to a Euroskopia survey, 60 percent of the Greek population condemns the Russian attack on Ukraine, but the percentage is much lower than in other European countries. The war has once again divided the Greek population. Support for the Ukrainian people is unquestionable, but in the political debate over whether Greece should continue to supply Ukraine with weapons, there is hesitation to act.

Financial weapons

The sanctions package of the G7 and other countries against Moscow is considered to be one of the largest in history. It includes far-reaching sanctions in almost all sectors of the economy. In addition, there are personal sanctions against businessmen, oligarchs and politicians. The sanctions reveal how finance can be used in geopolitical conflicts. In the future, more attention will be paid to avoiding asymmetrical dependencies.

Urban warfare and heroism via Twitter feed

The war in Ukraine is also a social media war. The heroic deeds of the local population are broadcast to the world around the clock. A perfect tool against the disinformation autocrat Putin. The Ukrainians are winning the media battle against the more traditionally oriented Kremlin by far.

Propaganda and repression

In Russia, freedom of expression is falling by the wayside. State television spreads disinformation, independent media are harassed. Since 2014, the Kremlin has been running an extensive propaganda campaign. State television broadcasts incessant anti-Ukrainian and anti-Western propaganda, with the result that Russians know less and less about their neighbors in the West.

The Canary Islands as a bridge of commercial connection between Europe and Africa

The Canary Islands is the only autonomous community that has a notable advantage over others, and that is that, due to its geographical position and uniqueness, it is considered by the European Union as an outermost region. This designation brings with it the opportunity to take advantage of all the benefits offered so that Spanish and even European companies can do business with Africa through the archipelago.

"Europe is part of Macron‘s DNA"

The incumbent French President Emmanuel Macron was re-elected with a clear lead over his rival Marine Le Pen. However, the gap between the two candidates has narrowed compared to 2017. Although this means that the incumbent president can continue to govern with a comfortable majority, it cannot be denied that a significant and growing part of French society voted for the far right, as Marine Le Pen scored almost eight percentage points more than in 2017.
