Wars and migration

As is well known, wars (along with poverty, natural disasters and persecution) are one of the reasons at the root of migratory movements, of significant movements of people. Although political debates at the European level often tend to focus on migration for economic reasons, periodically (and unfortunately) various armed conflicts, more or less close to home, have a direct impact on migratory flows to our continent.

The West always makes the same mistake

Sarajevo in 1914, the Sudetenland in 1938, Poland in 1945, Crimea in 2014: something happens in seemingly far-flung locations and nobody recognises the implications. And now? Something can still be done. At moments like these, we need courage and decisiveness, but also wisdom. But it won’t be enough for the Ukrainians. We must be ready for a long struggle.

A Silent War

When the first planes appeared in the sky, Fatima* was outside, working in the backyard. As the first bomb fell on her family’s house in Sanaa, she did not run away. Instead, she rushed back, trying to make her way through the flames and the smoke that were slowly engulfing the building, to reach the room where she had left her three-year-old daughter.

Regular Economic Report - Q4

The fourth quarter of 2021 marks the beginning of one of the most challenging periods of Bosnia and Herzegovina's post-war economy. Citizens and businessmen directly feel all the negative effects of the current crisis, but also the lack of adequate economic policy among domestic decision-makers.

Sahel food insecurity aggravated by war in Ukraine

With the outbreak of war between Russia and Ukraine on 24 February 2022, the food security crisis poses an existential threat to the Sahelian economy. The Sahel's fragile state of food security stems from the agricultural sector's inability to produce enough cereals to cover its own subsistence.

Tourism sector in the Mediterranean region: a time of challenges, opportunities and changes

On April 7, under the organization of the FNF Madrid in coordination with the Rabat office and the CI2RC (Centre International de la Recherche et de Renforcement des Capacités), a debate was held on some of the most important tourism topics in the Mediterranean region today.
It was attended by experts who approach tourism activity from different angles of the prism.

A danger to the neighbours

For Russia, violence is a common part of its political toolbox. Putin thinks revanchistically, ignoring the fact that the former Soviet Union was by no means defeated by NATO. This self-inflicted insolvency is part of history. It cannot be reversed at the expense of its neighbors. And certainly not at the expense of the European order.

Poland’s homework

The Polish government recognized the dangers of Russian leader Vladimir Putin early on and took action. However, its questionable rule-of-law domestic policies and confrontation with the EU and Germany have greatly diminished the effectiveness of this action. Since the attack on Ukraine, Polish and German foreign policies have converged.

Russian information weapons

In early March, the European Union banned the broadcast of Russian state media because, for example, Sputnik and Russia Today are under the permanent direct or indirect control of the government of the Russian Federation. State media play a key role in military aggression against Ukraine. However, despite the ban, RT DE continued to broadcast.

Braving the cold for Kyiv?

Suddenly, the West recalls Schiller: "The most pious man cannot live in peace if his evil neighbor does not like it. The unimaginable back: Vladimir Putin reaches out to a neighboring country, breaking all taboos. At stake is not only Ukraine, but Europe's 77-year-old peace order, the longest of all time, analyzes Josef Joffe.
