Zimbabwe's Currency

Behind Zimbabwe’s currency woes

The Z$750 000 note shocked many as a bigger banknote, but the Z$100 billion-dollar note in 2008 stole the show, which remains named as the Guinness record world's highest denomination banknote notwithstanding the ensuing introduction of a Z$100 trillion dollar note. The 100 trillion-dollar note became part of Zimbabwe’s former central bank chief Gideon Gono's failed efforts at saving an economic Armageddon characterised by a feisty inflation and deficits...

Local and regional elections in the UK: Liberal Democrats make solid comeback

The results of the local and regional elections in Great Britain provide very little information about the political future of the country. The government lost, but at the same time the opposition did not win. The Conservatives, in whose party leader Boris Johnson not even his own voters now have confidence, have suffered a clear defeat.

Armenia and Azerbaijan are restarting peace negotiations

During the 2020 war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan (aided by Turkey) demonstrated huge military advantage over Armenia and won substantial territories. After watching the war for 44 days, Russia brokered a ceasefire, based on which it has deployed a military contingent in Nagorno-Karabakh, aimed at peacekeeping. Despite this, regular incidents take place at the line of contact, which incrementally shift the ceasefire line in favour of Azerbaijan.

Ghosts of the past: the son of the late dictator becomes the new president of the Philippines

It is a dark day for the Philippines: with almost two thirds of votes Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., son of the late dictator, won the presidential election. His victory is due to a long-planned disinformation campaign. Also the newly elected vice-president stands for an illiberal policy: she is no other than the daughter of the populist President Rodrigo Duterte.

Marcos dynasty returns

According to initial counts, Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr, son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr, has won the Philippine presidential election with over 50 percent of the vote. Under "Bongbong," the rule of law and freedom of the press in the Philippines will be further undermined, analyzes Rebecca Zistel, Philippine expert of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom.

Spain and Germany reconcile with Morocco

Rising cost of living, looming food shortages in parts of the world, and a return to thinking in terms of "spheres of influence." The Russian war of aggression in Ukraine is having a global impact. In many places, for example, it is acting as a catalyst for a readjustment of international relations and is even causing a renaissance of "realpolitik" in some parts of the world. This is the case, for example, in relations between European partners and Morocco.

Alexander De Croo reigns in turbulent times

With Alexander De Croo, Belgium has a liberal prime minister at the helm for the third time in a row. As head of government, he has immediately taken on a more visible role in European discussions. Alexander De Croo will speak about the changing times in Europe today at our event "A Fight for Freedom - How Putin's War is Renewing Europe".

Leni Robredo: A symbol of hope

A “pink wave” mirroring the color of the presidential candidate has swept of the Philippines since the country’s current Vice President and chairman of the Liberal Party Leni Robredo announced her candidacy for president. As the Philippines approaches the presidential election on May 9th, and Robredo’s campaign continue to gain momentum, who is the person behind this movement?

Personality beats the political program

In a few days more than 67 million registered Filipino voters will decide on a new government: the constitution of the country prohibits a president to be re-elected. Therefore current Head of State Rodrigo Duterte, whose infamous so-called “War on Drugs” is meanwhile investigated by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, will no longer reign the country. Will the Philippines finally head into a brighter future or could matters get worse?
