Spanien
Economy and crisis
11.11.2022 David Henneberger

Resilience or a need to catch up?

Crisis-tested Spain is coming through the current crisis relatively unscathed: While the growth forecast for the current year is still 4.1%, only 2.2% is predicted for 2023. At first glance, this puts the economy in a better position than Germany, where a recession can now be considered a certainty. The reasons for the decline in growth prospects in Spain are also the rampant uncertainty, high inflation rates and a drop in exports. But serious differences can also be seen in the inflation rate. Why is Spain coming through the crisis better than Germany?

Sunak to focus on economic stability and Tory unity, impact on India-UK ties minimal

Rishi Sunak is the third Tory Prime Minister in 2022. The political turmoil within the Conservative Party, the disastrous performance of Liz Truss and the general economic difficulties offered Sunak an opportunity. In his first speech as Prime Minister, Sunak highlighted that the country was facing a profound economic crisis. He asserted that through integrity, professionalism and accountability, he will provide stability and rectify the mistakes of his predecessor. Apart from tough economic leadership, his real challenge is political. As a leader, he has to unite a strongly divided party.

Bayt Al Fenn – Chkoun Ana?

Chkoun Ana (Who am I)? This was the essential question that kept eleven artists from all over Morocco busy during the 2022 edition of the arts residency “Bayt Al Fenn” (house of art), an annual project jointly organized by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and Hiba Foundation. The project now concluded when the public could discover the fruit of the artists’ work during a vernissage and exhibition at the National Library in Rabat.

Impunity, journalism, and democracy

In Mexico, after the wave of violence against the press unleashed years ago, civil society coined the phrase "You don't kill the truth by killing journalists". And it is true, it is not killed: it is assaulted, made invisible, its access is made difficult. The stories for which journalists were assaulted or murdered rarely come to light and insecurity often leads to forced displacement and silence.

Italy competition, the unknown

In Italy, it seems that competitors are protected more than competition. Since 2009, it would be mandatory to adopt an annual Competition Act. “It would be” because – in fact – it was issued only once in 2017. Until President Draghi has indicated it among the Government's priorities because strongly requested by the EU to be able to free the funds of Recovery Plan: it was therefore included in the Pnrr and, finally, in November 2021 a Draft of the law "Competition" was launched by the Council of Ministers.

The Completion of Israel’s transition to a “Two Bloc System”

Israeli elections are right around the corner, and millions of Israelis are going to vote again on November 1, for the fifth time in three years. Since the Israeli Knesset dissolved on June 30, 2022, little has changed on the Israeli political map. There are still two main blocs, PM Lapid’s diverse liberal “center-left” coalition and former PM Netanyahu’s religious far-right opposition. This “Two Bloc System” is still being challenged by Minister of Defense Benny Gantz, who offers an alternative government that includes parties from both blocs.

Southern Mediterranean countries, a reliable and attractive platform for European industry

The global economic environment remains volatile. And European countries will have to deal over the next decade with recurrent disruptions, persistent uncertainties and thus navigating turbulent paths. Indeed, Europe is leaning towards a balance between efficiency and resilience. This inclination will be increasingly reinforced by the growing need to bring the production of strategic sectors closer to the place of consumption in Europe. In this sense, the potential of the southern Mediterranean countries as part of a triangular ecosystem is unquestionable!

Too much influence for the extreme right

Sweden is experiencing a dramatic change of government. For the first time in the history of the Scandinavian country, a minority government of conservatives, Christian Democrats and one of the two liberal parties is supported in parliament by the far-right Sweden Democrats. A power shift that catapults the far-right into the center of power. While parts of the Swedish Liberals remain skeptical of government participation, the new government under Ulf Kristersson begins work.
