Building Community, Unlocking Strengths
The Superhero Game Marks World Refugee Day in Amman

In commemoration of World Refugee Day, the Refugee Unit at the Friedrich Naumann Foundation in Jordan organised an immersive, city-wide initiative titled The Superhero Game, transforming the urban landscape of Downtown Amman into a dynamic arena for learning, collaboration, and community empowerment.
Bringing together 30 refugee participants, the initiative was conceived not merely as a recreational event but as a structured, values-based experience aimed at fostering personal development, social cohesion, and cultural exchange. Participants navigated a series of interactive challenges across culturally significant sites, including the Hashemite Plaza, the Grand Husseini Mosque, and the Armat Amman Museum—each location serving as a backdrop for dialogue, teamwork, and collective reflexion.
A Game with Purpose
At its core, The Superhero Game is designed to cultivate essential life skills while reinforcing the power of community. Through a curated series of quests—including logic puzzles, role-playing exercises, values-based scavenger hunts, and group discussions—the game facilitated the development of communication, leadership, and critical thinking competencies. Each activity was embedded with liberal democratic values, encouraging participants to reflect on themes of freedom, responsibility, and coexistence.
The program’s guiding ethos—“Alone we are strong, but together we are unstoppable”—resonated throughout the day, reinforcing the belief that shared growth and mutual trust are essential for overcoming adversity.
Key Activities
-
The Puzzle Quest challenged participants to assemble meaningful messages from scattered words, testing coordination and cognitive agility.
-
The Clue Hunt encouraged strategic exploration, with teams deciphering symbolic clues linked to core values and community principles.
-
The Acting Quest invited participants to interpret and perform real-life scenarios, promoting empathy and reinforcing collective responsibility.
-
The Questioner Station created space for structured dialogue, where participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions around the meaning of liberalism and inclusion—particularly in the context of refugee experiences within host communities.

The event concluded with a closing ceremony that celebrated the participants’ achievements and underscored the importance of collaborative learning.
Diana, who led the winning team, remarked:
“This day helped me realise how much we can accomplish when we believe in each other’s strengths.”
Another participant, Issa, shared:
“It reminded me that each of us holds power we often overlook—and that recognising this is the first step toward real change.”

Looking Ahead
As global displacement continues to reshape communities, initiatives like The Superhero Game offer a vital reminder: when individuals are given the opportunity to connect, lead, and grow, they not only rebuild their own lives but contribute meaningfully to the societies around them.
As Eng. Lilian Haddad, the game’s designer, reflected:
“We are all heroes in our own stories. Within each of us lies the strength to create change—sometimes it simply needs the right moment and space to emerge.”
FNF Jordan remains committed to creating inclusive, participatory spaces where refugees are not seen solely through the lens of vulnerability, but as agents of change, resilience, and innovation.
On World Refugee Day—and every day—we affirm our belief in freedom, dignity, and the transformative power of community.
