Italy's entanglements with Russia and the parties' energy programs

Russia and Italy have been more closely linked since the 1960s than many realize. Italy was home to the largest communist party this side of the Iron Curtain in Europe, and its business community concluded one lucrative industrial and energy treaty after another with Russia - at the behest not least of Italy's conservative Christian Democrats.

Investing in the Mediterranean. Europe and Africa hand to hand

If there is one certainty since 2020, it is that the global economic situation is changing and unstable, and this makes it difficult to project the investment climate. In recent years, we have seen promising projects hit by a global pandemic. On the other hand, as is usually the case, business opportunities have also arisen. In this context, what is the future of investment?

A nod of respect and awe to river Indus

Many would think about why the protection of river Indus is so essential at a time when almost one third of Pakistan is flooded. The answer by Ms Salam and Mr Malik is this : the river is a continuous renewing body of water which provides food, a fisherman's economy, a means of settlements and the regulated water flow helps agriculture, the backbone of the country’s economy. It needs to be respected.

Meloni's march towards Rome - Italy threatened with a shift to the right

For the first time, a woman has the chance to become Italy's prime minister. Giorgia Meloni is female, modern and - ultra-right. She has managed to transform her party, the "Fratelli d’Italia (FdI)” (Brothers of Italy), from a fringe party to the strongest political force that also finds acceptance in the bourgeois camp. How could this happen? An attempt to explain the Meloni phenomenon.

A tale of two rivers

If only there were photographs of 6 foot river turtles then we could show the world how river was a thriving eco-system. This is the reason that 'Expedition Indus 2022' by Wajahat Malik is important because it is providing a documentary evidence of the culture and economy of the river behind the civilization of this region.

EuroPride 2022 - the complicated birth of the first EuroPride in South Eastern Europe

Belgrade hosted EuroPride this weekend, an international event dedicated to the rights of the LGBTIQ+ community. Despite strong opposition from the ultra-right, but also from the Serbian Orthodox Church and parts of the government, the final rally took place in the centre of the Serbian capital on Saturday.

Ukraine's food industry: a lifeline under pressure

The Ukrainian economy is suffering heavily under Russia’s war of aggression. So far, one can only make assumptions about the full extent of the economic damages. The same goes for the material losses of Ukrainian businesses. However, an initial assessment has now been made possible via a survey conducted by the European Business Association.

Election in Italy: The clock is ticking inexorably

Italy's general election will be held on Sept. 25. The short, two-month election campaign so far has focused on inflation, rising living and energy costs, the Ukraine war and migration. Italy's right-wing bloc, led by the far-right Fratelli d'Italia in coalition with the Lega and Forza Italia, has good prospects of achieving an absolute majority in both chambers, analyzes Rahel Zibner, Project Manager for Italy.

Von der Leyen’s State of the Union Address – Many nice headlines and few propositions

In her third State of the Union address, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen took stock of the European Commission's work programme and recalled the EU's spirit of unity and solidarity in times of war. As expected, von der Leyen placed a strong focus on dealing with Russia and Ukraine. Another important policy area concerns the future of economic governance in the EU. However, expectations for more efficiency, capacity to act and clout of the European multi-level architecture are high, driven by the proposals of the Conference on the Future of Europe. Whether the EU takes its democratic model seriously will be seen in the future.
