Demographic Engineering in the Course of Syria’s War

The 70-page report “Demographic Engineering in the Course of Syria’s War: A consequence or cause?" analyses the processes of population displacement and urban destruction in the context of the deliberate change of the demographic structure in Syria, from the perspective of demographic engineering.

Dialogue, the most radically human instrument

We are in the International Year of Dialogue as a Guarantee of Peace. The steps taken through agreements and conventions by different governments and institutions for greater collaboration and understanding show us the path to follow. The Mediterranean is configured as an ideal space to promote, as it has done so many times throughout its history, a shared story of hopes, dreams and common work.

Stifled Voices: The Plight of Afghan Journalists on World Press Day

Today is International Press Freedom Day. The situation of media freedom has always been a challenge in Afghanistan. But since the Taliban took power in August 2021, it has become even more difficult. All media professionals, especially the women among them, face significant obstacles in Afghanistan when it comes to reporting truthfully and objectively on events in the country. What can be done to better support Afghan media professionals in this difficult time?

Nepal’s Democratic Transition: Turbulent but Promising

While the situation in Nepal appears to be chaotic at the moment, what is evident among countries globally that have gone through such transitions is that they have all faced a similar challenge. Nepal’s transition from an authoritarian regime to a multi-party democracy was merely over 30 years ago. Much like other young democracies, Nepal is still struggling to make intricate adjustments on the executive, legislative, and judicial fronts, whilst also ensuring that the problems of the previous system are addressed, and good practices retained.

An Election without Voters

Out of the 45.095 citizens in four Northern municipalities in Kosovo – most of them being ethnic Serbs – with the right to vote, only 1.556 of them exercised their right to vote: the vast majority of them were ethnic Albanians and only 13 were ethnic Serbs. As an outcome, all elected heads of four predominantly Serb municipalities are now ethnic Albanians. The elections recorded one of the lowest turnouts ever with only 3,5%.

Meloni firmly holds the reins in Rome

Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of the far-right "Brothers of Italy" party has been in office for about six months. The idea that the head of government of Europe's third-largest economy could take the reins of the right-wing populist camp critical of the EU triggered worry lines in much of the EU. But having arrived in the reality of government responsibility, Meloni has so far led her country's political fortunes in a far less confrontational manner than feared. Time for an initial stocktaking.

Challenges on the Mediterranean coast

The Mediterranean is a prosperous area, but with considerable inequalities. The experiences of other regions in implementing economic development policies should be taken into account in the countries of this region, which offers great potential. Development must be sustainable, respecting resources and people's rights.

The State of Liberal Democracy in Greece and Germany

Since its foundation, the European Union has represented human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and respect for human rights, including minority rights. When it comes to liberal values, Europe is not a homogeneous space. There are repeated restrictions on freedom of speech and freedom of the press, as well as on the principle of the rule of law. Although both Greece and Germany are considered liberal democracies, each country faces unique challenges and opportunities in maintaining and strengthening its democratic institutions.

New liberal government in Estonia

In the Estonian parliamentary elections held in March, Prime Minister Kallas' liberal Reform Party received 31 percent of the vote and at the same time had a free hand in choosing its coalition partners. After almost five weeks of coalition negotiations, Kallas brought the progressive-centrist Esti 200 party and the social democratic SDE party into her governing alliance. Today the new government takes office. In what situation does the coalition take over the country and what is its vision for the future of the countries political agenda?
