June 4th in Hongkong – a national security issue instead of a memorial

For years and years, the people of Hong Kong peacefully remembered the Tiananmen Massacre of 1989 in Beijing. Since the National Security Law has been passed, this is no longer possible: June 4th is now a high-alert day for the national security forces, the organisers of the peaceful memorial are in jail, and pro-China groups meet in Victoria Park, instead of activists.

New elections in Spain

Early elections are the best option for Prime Minister Sánchez

Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has called early parliamentary elections for July 23, responding to the PSOE's electoral debacle in Sunday's regional and local elections. This will also affect Spain's EU Council presidency in the 2nd half of this year, which will now start in the hot election campaign phase. Whether voters will ultimately reward this move will also depend on how quickly the opposition can adjust to the new scenario.

He who sows violence

Two acts of bloodshed shock Serbia and bring hundreds of thousands of people to the streets in protest against the pervasive violence. On May 3rd and 4th, a total of 18 people, mostly young, lost their lives in two killing sprees. Serbia is in shock: Such an outbreak of violence has not been seen since the wars of the 1990s; people are grappling with their anger and grief, and the entire country is struggling to cope. For the first time, the regime of President Aleksandar Vučić appears vulnerable. Pro-government mass demonstrations are planned for Friday, while regime critics will take to the streets again on Saturday. Is autocracy in Serbia wavering?

Greek national elections bring surprising results with shifting political landscape

The Greek national elections on May 21st left the country in awe as the political landscape shifted unexpectedly. The outcome has sparked a significant surprise, with implications for the main opposition party (SYRIZA) and its relevance in the political landscape, since it seems to have lost trust among the voters, raising questions regarding the dynamics of the opposition in general, after the significant rise of PASOK.

Historic Rally in Chișinău: Europe is Moldova, Moldova is Europe

"Moldovans are Europeans, and Moldova must become an equal member of the European Union by 2030." With these words, Moldovan President Maia Sandu addressed more than 75,000 people who came to a pro-European rally on Sunday. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, had also arrived, having announced to the crowd already in her speech in Romanian: "I have come to deliver a message: Europe is Moldova, Moldova is Europe".

Women filmmakers in the Mediterranean, rising values

The countries of the Mediterranean form a diverse and global space where we can find many differences, but also similarities. If we go to the world of cinema, we can see how in many of these countries, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Morocco, Spain... we find a point of view that is becoming more and more important: that of women.

Upcoming Greek elections: What to expect?

On Sunday, the Greeks will elect their new parliament. However, the electoral system makes it difficult to form a government with a majority. The "Greek bonus" used to reward the party with the most votes with 50 extra seats in parliament, which made coalition building superfluous. However, the sovereign debt crisis led to change, new parties emerged and coalition governments became necessary. Prime Minister Mitsotakis, however, is a politician who does not like to share power. After his election, he reintroduced the old system. If no government can be formed after Sunday's election, the old system would be used in a repeat election a few weeks later.

Seeking Marriage Equality

What is currently taking place at the Supreme Court of India is nothing short of a historical moment. After the Supreme Court decriminalized Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and held that same-sex conduct between two consenting adults would not be a criminal offence, it is now hearing 19 petitions which have been filed seeking marriage equality and legal recognition of marriage between two persons, irrespective of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
