US-Präsident Biden, der japanische Premier Kishida und der südkoreanische Präsident Yoon
Summit

Historic summit at Camp David

US President Joe Biden, South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will meet at Camp David on 18 August. The recent rapprochement between the two Asian liberal democracies paved the way for the meeting. The improved relationship between Japan and South Korea is also in the interest of the USA and the EU. Deeper cooperation has long been a goal of American foreign policy and an important pillar of Biden's Indo-Pacific strategy. However, Beijing views the rapprochement of the three democracies with scepticism and even speaks of a "mini-Nato".

The Mediterranean on a boat

The Mediterranean is a sea of languages, religions, books and libraries. Perhaps there is no place in the world with such a concentration of libraries, with so many libraries with history. This is a journey through some of those that have marked the life of the Mediterranean and of the author of this text from Beirut to Tangiers.

Political Earthquake in the Argentinian Primaries

The primaries for the presidential election in Argentina on August 13th triggered a political earthquake: Javier Milei from the "La Libertad Avanza" party secured a surprising victory with 30 percent of the votes, overshadowing the established political forces. Milei is considered politically right-leaning and describes himself as "liberal, libertarian, and anarcho-capitalist." These developments could initiate a change in Argentina's political landscape.

Taming the Digital Realm: Global Content Moderation Practices

In this in-depth publication on global content moderation practices, we explore the challenges and implications of regulating online platforms. Several authors highlight the importance of considering local socio-political and cultural contexts when enforcing content moderation, while others examine the delicate balance between regulation, digital rights, and freedom of expression.

Geopolitics Made Tangible

The recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian port and agricultural infrastructure are just the latest in a series of strategic moves and positioning attempts. Two main objectives are at the forefront: first, the weakening of liberal democracies, and second, the expansion of Russia's power claims – geopolitics made tangible.

The Syrian-Lebanese Migration Puzzle: A new EU approach?

The debate about Syrian refugees, particularly in Lebanon, has shifted these past months. Bashar al-Ásad is back on the international scene, and the re-incorporation of Syria in the Arab League has shown that echoes of peace are now part of the future roadmap for the country. In this vein, some voices argued that it’s time for Syrian refugees to go back home, since stability seems to be a new direction for the country. Moreover, Lebanon, the main host country for Syrian refugees, has been facing one of the worst financial crises of its history.

Borderline Balkans

In an area smaller than former West Germany, as many as six countries – Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia and Serbia – are bundled together: the Western Balkans is the colourful mosaic in the courtyard of the European Union. Travellers are bound to experience for themselves how much still needs to be done to integrate the region in a united Europe.

Europe without the Mediterranean

A few days before the start of the NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) summit in Vilnius, the incessant arrival of boats in Lampedusa once again overwhelmed the capacity of the reception centres, where more than 2,000 migrants were concentrated after having survived the Mediterranean. Focused on the war in Ukraine, the Alliance has been seemingly more detached from the problems of the so-called southern flank. Although European and American leaders are well aware that Euro-Atlantic security is increasingly complex in today's changing international order.

How the Middle East can benefit from multilateralism

Like many regions around the world, the Middle East, in particular the Arab World, had gone through turbulent episodes at the height of the Cold War. As the former colonial powers of Britain and France began their slow withdrawal from the region at the end of the Second World War, the United States moved in to secure oil routes from the Arabian Gulf as well as to protect pro-western monarchies from the Arab nationalist tide that found an ally in the Soviet Union.
