The Primacy of Human Rights in Business: Learning from the German Experience

On 9 November 2017, Dr. Birgit Grundmann, former state secretary of the Federal Ministry of Justice in Germany, spoke before students and professors of law at the Ateneo Law School in Makati City, where she shared how Germany’s unique historical and socio-political experiences have cultivated a strong system of respect and protection of rule of law and human rights. More specifically, she extensively discussed the role of the public and private sectors in the evolving concept of business and human rights.

Raif Badawi Award Ceremony 2017

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom has awarded this year’s Raif Badawi Award for courageous journalists to Turkish investigative journalist Ahmet Şık in absentia. The independent jury selected Şık because of his outstanding importance for Turkey’s free media, and as a representative of all journalists currently imprisoned in Turkey. In Ahmet Şık’s absence, Ensaf Haidar, wife of imprisoned Saudi blogger Raif Badawi, presented the award to Şık’s lawyer, human rights activist Can Atalay. “I am deeply touched by Ahmet Şık’s courage. He and Raif are sharing the same fate. Both were imprisoned for saying what they think”, said Haidar.

Boris Nemtsov Forum

A Russia without Putin?

"My father was associated with the future. That is why the future is the theme of the forum." It was with these words that Zhanna Nemtsova opened the Boris Nemtsov Forum 2017 in Berlin, noting that the eternal discussions about Putin and his politics were indeed important, but were failing to take Russia any further. Or, as she put it, ‘discussing Putinism is about the same as discussing Robert Mugabe’. Entitled "Politics without Vision? Future Lab on Russia and the EU", the Forum gathered diverse civil society actors on the 9th and 10th of October 2017. Coming from the domains of art and culture, business and research, they met to debate their visions of a post-Putin Russia. For the second year in a row, the forum was organised by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and the Boris Nemtsov Foundation for Freedom and supported by the European Endowment for Democracy.
