The EU and a US Presidency: Joe Biden – The Return of Politics

Donald Trump has not yet left the White House and votes continue to be (re-)counted in some US states. But all the signs point to it: the next president of the United States of America will be Democrat Joe Biden – with Vice-President Kamala Harris by his side. What does the Democratic duo’s victory mean for transatlantic relations?

Europe at the End of 2020: A New Start or More of the Same?

This Thursday and Friday, EU leaders will meet once again in Brussels for a European Council summit. The agenda is packed: COVID-19 pandemic, climate change, security, external relations and, on Friday afternoon, a EURO summit focusing on the capital market and banking union. And once again the question to the EU is: Hang in there or restart?

Bill Gates, the Villain

The COVID-19 pandemic has inspired a few prominent conspiracy theories. One of the most popular ones draws a connection between the building of 5G infrastructure and the spread of the virus. One of the main targets of a disinformation campaign is none other than the billionaire Bill Gates, accused of developing an evil plot for world domination. Regardless of the fact that Microsoft’s founder donates billions of dollars for hunger and poverty relief, as well as for improving access to healthcare and education in developing countries, he became the go-to villain of conspiracy theorists from all over the globe. According to them, Gates has intentionally caused the COVID-19 pandemic, driven by greed to enrich himself by selling vaccines and medication.

A Changing Regional Dynamic in MENA: From a Bipolar to a Tripolar System

Historically, the Middle East has been the battleground of two mighty powers, forming a competing bipolar political system. Throughout the millennia the names changed and the power centers moved, but it was still two powers. There were a few exceptions when one great power took over the region and held it for a time, like Alexander Macedonian Empire, the Muslims Arab Khalifates, and later the Ottomans Empire.

How Europe Works For LGBTI Rights

The transition from an authoritarian political environment and closed market economy to all that the European Union (EU) stands for has been a long process that started two decades ago in Serbia, after the victory of the Democratic opposition. Following the EU – Western Balkans summit in Thessaloniki in 2003, the accession of Serbia to the EU became an inevitable and irreversible process.

Hybrid Protests Against a Hybrid Regime

Serbia has a long tradition of anti-government and anti-systemic protests. The 1990s, marked by the authoritarian rule of Slobodan Milošević, wars, the dissolution of Yugoslavia, international sanctions and general impoverishment, witnessed a great number of opposition rallies as a reaction to these deteriorating circumstances and the regime’s undemocratic practices.
