EU-China relations

Why Alleviating Resource Dependency on China is so Complex for the EU

The People’s Republic of China is putting more and more pressure on European decision-makers. They have not been aware of how deeply entangled European economic productivity is with Chinese supply chains, especially Chinese raw materials imports. Along with the understanding of Europe’s dependency comes the realisation that this creates a political dependency that is to be taken very seriously. While the EU is looking for ways to diversify alternative ways to cover its resource supply, unity on a common political stance towards China seems to be almost impossible to achieve.

WAR IN EUROPE
24.02.2023 Eleni Siapikoudi

Being Women in a country under attack

One year has passed since the armed attack by Russia against Ukraine and the ensuing hostilities have brought the most severe forms of human rights and international humanitarian law violations into the everyday lives of people in Ukraine, putting at risk countless lives, and causing massive displacement and destruction of civilian infrastructure. Arguably, hundreds of women and girls in Ukraine have become victims of sexual assault and torture committed by the Russian army and reports have documented the increasing use of rape as a weapon of war.

The War in Ukraine: A South Asian Perspective
24.02.2023 FNF South Asia

War in Ukraine and its impact on South Asia

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine is a complex and multi-faceted issue with historical origins. Ukraine has borne its devastating consequences for almost a year now. Russia attempts to justify the war by citing its national security interests and portraying the offensive as necessary for the protection of the ethnic Russian population in eastern Ukraine; however, it has violated several international normative principles.

Diplomatic thaw between Turkey and Armenia?

Once again, two earthquakes shook the Turkish-Syrian border region yesterday, killing six people in Turkey. To ensure better care for the survivors, Turkey opened a border crossing despite deep enmity with neighbouring Armenia. Armenia was one of the first countries to send rescue teams to both Turkey and Syria. Through humanitarian cooperation, the two countries are now seeking to normalise their relations. Can a rapprochement succeed despite the disputes that have lasted for almost a century?

The case of Jimmy Lai shows: Beijing makes the rules in Hongkong

Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai has been charged under the so-called National Security Act. His British lawyer was forbidden to represent him in the trial. The Hong Kong courts had still allowed it, but a directive from Beijing stipulated: no foreigners at National Security Law trials. Dennis Kwok analyzes for the FNF China Bulletin the current state of legal security in Hong Kong.

EU summit on migration: far from consensus

In February, a special summit was held in Brussels to focus on the EU's migration policy. One of the topics at the summit was the European Union's cooperation with relevant countries of origin in joint migration management. What was not addressed was the fact that many people set out precisely because they have no legal means of entry. However, the polarizing issue that continues to divide member states became a sideshow in light of Ukrainian Prime Minister Selenskyi's visit.

Malaysias Premierminister Anwar Ibrahim

14.02.2023 Dr. Almut Besold

Anwar Ibrahim is finally head of government

For more than 30 years, Anwar Ibrahim fought for his political goals - and was even thrown into prison for it. He stands for multi-ethnic and progressive politics - standing up to rising Islamism and Malay ethnonationalism in the Southeast Asian country. His Justice Party is a long-standing partner of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. Now, for the first time, the progressive politician will lead Malaysia's government. However, Anwar faces the challenge of unifying the divided country and stabilizing the stumbling economy.

Blitz action: President Maia Sandu replaces prime minister

The Republic of Moldova has had a new head of government since Friday. This was triggered by a lightning action of the popular President Maia Sandu. In the morning, Sandu had invited the government cabinet to a meeting behind closed doors, which led to the resignation of Prime Minister Natalia Gavriliță at noon. Then, in the afternoon, the new Prime Minister Dorin Recean, former Minister of Interior (2012-2014) and until then a close confidant and advisor to the President on defense and national security, as well as Secretary of the Supreme Security Council of the Republic, was presented at the Presidential Office.
