The team of the State Office Mitteldeutschland organizes events of political adult education in Central Germany, mainly in Sachsen-Anhalt and Thüringen. We cooperate with liberal state foundations such as the Erhardt Hübner Foundation e.V. in Sachsen-Anhalt.

The spectrum ranges from seminars on a small scale, in which we focus on a specialist topic such as press relations, rhetoric or even cultural-historical topics. In the Begegnungsstätte Deutsche Einheit, we organize lecture evenings on topics of recent German history and the history of liberalism. At more central locations, we organize panel discussions on current topics of politics and society.

We also offer school classes training in moral courage and extremism in society, as well as supplementary courses on German history, in particular on German division and reunification, for which we also work with contemporary witnesses. However, the program also includes joint visits with representatives from business, society and culture, with whom the participants can then discuss current issues in precise locations.

The team from the regional office gets support by program managers from the respective regions in Sachsen, Sachsen-Anhalt and Thüringen. The forum leaders have their ear even closer to the exciting topics on site and organize events tailored to the needs of the participants, which can have high local relevance. We regularly cooperate with memorial sites and state structures such as the Federal Commissioner for Stasi documents, but also with politically related organizations such as the Liberal SME Initiatives or the Liberal University Groups.

The birthplace of Hans-Dietrich Genscher as a meeting place for German unity

A permanent exhibition shows recent German history from the Weimar Republic to German unification.

In the middle of a development area for new single-family homes in Halle-Reideburg stands a renovated building from 1865, the birthplace of Hans-Dietrich-Genscher, former Foreign Minister.

It was saved from the threat of demolition thanks to an initiative by a former member of the Bundestag and Minister of State at the Foreign Office, Cornelia Pieper (FDP). The former owners of the house, the Kreime family, donated the building in 2007 to the Erhard Hübner Foundation, the liberal state foundation of Sachsen-Anhalt. With the help of a loan, numerous donations from companies and private individuals as well as funds from Lotto Toto, the house got renovated for a total of 600,000 euros.

Today, the "Genscherhaus", as it is known to the population, is a place that reminds them of the problematic political stages of reunification: the open-mindedness of the German question in the East-West conflict, Dehler's visit to Moscow in 1963 to discuss the Berlin question, the Ostpolitik of the FRG, the letter on German unity in 1970, the CSCE process from 1973, glasnost and perestroika, Genscher's appeal in Davos in 1987 to take Gorbachev seriously, his appearance at the Prague Embassy in 1989 and, last but not least, the role of the East Germans in 1989 who peacefully fought for freedom and democracy in the streets. A special component is a facsimile of the Two Plus Four Treaty concluded in 1990.

The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom operates the building, which organizes political education programs in Sachsen-Anhalt and Thüringen. The exhibition can be visited individually during office hours on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Guided tours are also available by appointment during these hours as well as in the evening and on weekends. An adjoining seminar room allows groups to explore particular topics of the exhibition in greater depth before or after a guided tour and, if desired, to talk to contemporary witnesses.
