FNF has been actively working in Turkey with partners from civil society, academia, economy and politics since 1991, when we opened our office in Ankara. In 2002, we moved to Istanbul. Turkey is of crucial importance for Germany, Europe and the transatlantic cooperation due to its history, culture, economy, and geographical location. Therefore, FNF offers support to liberal-minded citizens and organizations in Turkey to promote liberal values in the society. This way, we strive to contribute to a liberal, democratic and prospering Turkey for all citizens.

Two deaths, hundreds of injuries, thousands of victims: Yet, no explanations
At least two refugees out of thousands -dreamt of passing the Pazarkule border crossing to reach Europe- died in February because of Turkey's refugee card, played against the EU. Hundreds were injured because of interferences on the border's Greek side. Waiting for days due to Turkey's exhortation and removed from the border when the pandemic began, most of the refugees had lost both their jobs and home when they returned to the cities where they came from.

Report on Freedom of the Press in Turkey
Domestically, all critical groups complain about the government’s pressure on media more than ever before. In this context, Freedom Research Association has been monitoring the state of the freedom of the press since 2014. How Popular is Erdoğan?
There are two aspects of popularity that needs to be discussed when speaking within the context of politicians. One is that this is a relative term. For a politician it is not important to be very popular. What is important on the other hand is that you need to be the most popular among your rivals. Second is the ability of a politician to convert her popularity to votes in an election. Popularity does not always ensure the support of the electorate.

Qua vadis, Lira?
After staying in the 7.70-7.90 range for the good part of the summer, the euro lira exchange rate (EURTRY) suddenly jumped around 10 percent in early August in a matter of days- and has been oscillating in the 8.50-8.80 band since then. This depreciation was largely specific to Turkey, as the currencies of other emerging markets remained largely stable.
