The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom has been active in the South Caucasus since 1996. The work began with projects of the political education in Azerbaijan, from 2002 also in Armenia and Georgia. The office is located in Tbilisi, Georgia. The main focus of the work is the transformation process of former soviet republics towards modern democracies with free political systems based on social market economy and the rule of law.

An attempt to circumvent international sanctions?
On September 14, 2023, the United States imposed sanctions on Otar Partskhaladze, the former Prosecutor General of Georgia. The National Bank of Georgia initially aligned with the sanctions, but this led to internal strife within the government. Irakli Kobakhidze, leader of the Georgian Dream party, declared the National Bank's actions unconstitutional. This dispute led Acting President of the National Bank, unilaterally amending the directive on sanctions.

Human Rights Defenders: Journalists
The UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders was adopted 25 years ago. The third edition of the publication "Human Rights Defenders" portrays media professionals who often accept personal threats to expose injustice and thus become human rights defenders in their home countries. „Our freedom, too, is only as secure as we ourselves are willing to stand up for it. Freedom of media and opinion was, is and will remain a definite indicator of how free the people in a country really are", says Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger, Deputy Chairwoman.

Strategic Decoupling: Phasing out russian economic influence in Germany
The study by the Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) examines the continuing entanglement between the German and Russian despite Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine. The Russian corporate presence in Germany is highly concentrated in around 40 larger firms, which specialize in oil refining, natural gas supply and distribution, metal and plastic products manufacturing, glass production, and transport. Russia’s war upended European peace and security and intensified global power competition. The study shows that the Kremlin's long arm extends far beyond Germany's misguided Ostpolitik.

Innovation and Education: Which policies help both to cross-fertilize each other?
This was the core question of the Liberal Forum Armenia taking place in a country famous for IT innovation and one of the leaders in exporting ICT services. The forum provided a space for discussions among politicians, academics and civil society organizations. FNF Board member Dr Maren Jasper-Winter also visited Armenia and talked about the educational policy cycle and its challenges.
