Bucharest
Romania became part of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom Southeast Europe’s sub-region in the early 1990s. The regional SEE office was already established 1999 in Bucharest when in 2006, the entire central coordination of FNF’s work was moved to Sofia. In 2014 FNF re-opened a bureau for Romania and its sister-country of Moldova in Bucharest. In over 20 years of ceaseless activity, the FNF has worked with all the local liberal parties, forces and NGO’s, and by doing so, made thousands of young people interested in liberalism. Today the main political partner is the USR party. The FNF is also in contact with all the local NGO’s who fight for the ideal of freedom.

The Republic of Moldova has experienced an important turning point since 2020. The victory of Maia Sandu in the presidential election, then of her pro-European Action and Solidarity Party (PAS), showed that Moldova's role as a neutral State, on the margins of the European Union and remaining in Russia’s sphere of influence, did not suit a majority of the population. The PAS has set entry into the EU by 2030 as a policy objective. In 2022, the country applied for EU membership, and negotiations began in 2024, just like for Ukraine.

Historic Victory of the Liberal Parties in Romania
At the local elections taking place on Sunday in Bucharest, the capital of Romania, the independent mayoral candidate Nicușor Dan has impressively asserted himself with 42.7% in the race against the officiating mayor Gabriela Firea (38%). Dan put an end to 12 years of social democratic government. He had to prove himself against an expensive dirty media campaign led by the Social Democrats (PSD).
