June 4th in Hongkong – a national security issue instead of a memorial
For years and years, the people of Hong Kong peacefully remembered the Tiananmen Massacre of 1989 in Beijing. Since the National Security Law has been passed, this is no longer possible: June 4th is now a high-alert day for the national security forces, the organisers of the peaceful memorial are in jail, and pro-China groups meet in Victoria Park, instead of activists.

The case of Jimmy Lai shows: Beijing makes the rules in Hongkong
Hong Kong publisher Jimmy Lai has been charged under the so-called National Security Act. His British lawyer was forbidden to represent him in the trial. The Hong Kong courts had still allowed it, but a directive from Beijing stipulated: no foreigners at National Security Law trials. Xi Jinping has ruled out the prospect of peaceful unification with Taiwan
Whatever view one takes on the appropriateness of the timing of the proposed trip to Taiwan by US House Speaker, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, the response from the Chinese Government, reflect a belligerence. Beijing has threatened both privately and publicly to escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait in response, including the prospect of intercepting the Speaker’s plane or introducing a No-Fly Zone over the island.
