The government of Burkina Faso is facing a rise in public anger over repeated killings by Islamist militants. In response, authorities cut mobile internet connection on Saturday 20 November that the government justified through a “defence and public security” provision. The suspension was following protests against the government and allied French forces after some 49 military police officers and four civilians were killed on 14 November by suspected jihadists. The initial internet cuts were to expire on 25 November but were extended by another four days. President Roch Kabore’s opponents have called for fresh protests on Saturday, 27 November against the government’s inability to contain violence by militants. Access to information and the right to protest must be respected and protected at all times (FNF statement with blue strap)
