Why Malaysia’s Economic and Political Outlook Matters to Germany
Malaysia Outlook Conference 2026
© FNF MalaysiaThe Malaysia Outlook Conference, organised annually by IDEAS Malaysia in partnership with FNF Malaysia, continues in 2026 with the theme of Resilience, Reform, and Shared Futures. The one-day Conference brought about a diverse line-up of experts divided into three panels with dedicated topics: climate governance, child protection, and Malaysia's position in the midst of geopolitical and geoeconomics complexities.
As the conference completes its chapter for this year, an unquestionable recognition arises of Malaysia's strategic position in the Asia Pacific, particularly in the face of the increasingly turbulent foreign and economic policies coming from the United States.
Dr. Stewart Nixon, Deputy Director of Research at IDEAS Malaysia, reveals in his analysis the intensifying need for a direct connectivity between Southeast Asia and Europe. This includes a varying degree of partnership and collaboration options on equally diverse sectors such as economic, security, technological, and environmental issues. Furthermore, Dr. Nixon also identified several shared needs and challenges faced by both Malaysia and Germany: infrastructure investment needs, decarbonisation and competitiveness, threats to liberal democracy, persisting inequalities, and their respective positioning on China's ever-increasing presence in the global political and economic stage.
At the core of it, the analysis reinforces the idea of building peace, stability, and shared prosperity through mutual dependence and cooperation. It remains to be seen how it will manifest itself moving forward, but there is plenty of room for both bilateral and inter-regional cooperation to grow and flourish in this ever-changing geo-economic and -political landscape.
