AI and Natural Disasters
When AI Meets Natural Disasters

AI and natural disasters

In a global context increasingly shaped by climate and environmental crises, the role of artificial intelligence has become a key issue. It is around this theme that FNF Tunisia organized a public debate on Friday, February 27, 2026, bringing together experts, journalists, and engaged participants.

The event offered a cross-cutting reflection on both the opportunities and risks associated with the use of AI in times of natural disasters. At the intersection of technological innovation and ethical challenges, discussions highlighted the many dimensions of a tool that is becoming increasingly indispensable.

The evening opened with a presentation of the book Sud en Mouvement by Adel Azzouni, setting the stage for a broader discussion on the global dynamics shaping societies in the Global South when facing contemporary crises. This introduction provided an analytical framework linking technological transformation with geopolitical realities.

Journalist Hanen Zbis then contributed a media perspective on information management during crises. She emphasized the growing risks of misinformation, often amplified by AI tools, while also underlining the crucial role of journalists in verifying and delivering accurate information.

Moderated by Hamdi Hached, the interactive debate allowed participants to engage with key questions: How can AI help anticipate natural disasters? What mechanisms are needed to limit the spread of misinformation? And most importantly, how can we ensure an ethical and responsible use of these technologies?

At the heart of the discussions, one key takeaway emerged: artificial intelligence is a powerful tool capable of anticipating, analyzing, and supporting decision-making in times of crisis. However, its impact ultimately depends on the responsibility and choices guiding its use.

By bringing together diverse perspectives and fostering open dialogue, this event contributed to a deeper collective reflection on the future of AI in the face of natural disasters highlighting the need for technology and resilience to move forward hand in hand.
