Myanmar-Thailand Youth Dialogue: Model to Stand Up for Democracy

Although Thailand and Myanmar share a long border and many common cultures, meaningful dialogues between people of the two countries are limited. This is exacerbated by recent developments in Myanmar leading to an influx of Myanmar refugees and migrants into Thailand, which is oftentimes received with skepticism and negativity by Thai people due to ingrained historical narratives and miscommunication between the two peoples.
In order to foster communication and dialogues between Thailand and Myanmar, especially among the youth, FNF Thailand organized the workshop “Growing Together: Myanmar & Thailand Youth Dialogue Stand Up for Democracy” from 29th November to 1st December 2024 in Chiang Rai, Thailand. The event brought together more than 40 youth from both countries to engage in discussions, share experiences, and explore opportunities for cooperation.
During the workshop, Thai and Myanmar youth found that they are more alike than different. They saw that the common traits they share can be a breeding ground for mutual benefits and coexistence. They see the need to change the hostile historical narratives against each other in order to create an environment where peace and opportunities can prosper.
This report by Dr. Wasin Punthong is a summary and an analysis of this fruitful event. More in the report.
