Angola
The Tightest Election Contest In Angola's History

Angola’s governing MPLA party has won another five years in power, but with a sharply reduced majority. President Joao Lourenco gets a second term amid concerns of possible fraud according to the opposition and civil society in Angola. MPLA’s share of the vote went down from the 61% in 2017 to 51.2% in 2022, while the opposition UNITA’s votes went sharply up from 27% in 2017 to 44% in 2022. Despite losing, UNITA has nearly doubled to 90 its seats in the 220-seat parliament, for the first time depriving the MPLA of the two-thirds majority needed to pass major reforms. The MPLA has been in power since independence from Portugal in 1975. Fewer than half of Angola’s registered voters turned out on last Wednesday’s election.
