Sought and found: Machado is the opposition's presidential candidate
Venezuela is at a historic crossroads: despite significant obstacles, the country held opposition-led primaries that illustrate a profound desire for change. María Corina Machado emerged victorious with around 90 per cent of the vote. But challenges remain, such as the disqualification of candidates and the use of public institutions and propaganda in favour of power holder Maduro, which require international action.

From Gummersbach to Berlin: Learning about the defense of human rights on the internet
Diego Ato, project coordinator of the Instituto Pro Libertad (IPL) and human rights activist, participated in the seminar "The defense of human and civil rights on the Internet, in society and in the business world" of the International Leadership Academy (IAF) of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF). SIDEI 2023: Over 120 teachers from Peru and Ecuador were trained in entrepreneurship and innovation topics.
Entrepreneurship and innovation are two of the most important topics today. Both concepts are fundamental for the development of our society and the formation of future leaders. And this should be reflected in higher education. That is why the 4th edition of the International Seminar on Teaching Entrepreneurship and Innovation (SIDEI) 2023 organized by Universidad de Piura presented a great opportunity for teachers from northern Peru and Ecuador.

Europe must unite in the face of global challenges
The Reshape Europe Conference of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom on 10 October 2023 set a milestone in the global dialogue on the question: How can Europe become more resilient and sovereign to stand up to autocratic governments? Together with international experts, the Foundation discussed the challenges of the new era in terms of economy, security, energy and the liberal values of democracy.

Ecuador in a State of Emergency
Ecuador has been deeply divided for some years now. Not even the liberal-conservative President Guillermo Lasso, elected in 2021, has been able to change this situation. On May 17, Lasso dissolved the National Assembly, Ecuador's parliament, following impeachment proceedings and resigned from office. This unusual but constitutional measure was supposed to clear the way for new elections, scheduled for August 20, 2023. Now, the election campaign has dramatically generated great uncertainty in the country: the murder of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio, journalist and former member of Ecuador's National Assembly, just 11 days before the presidential elections, has plunged the country into a deep crisis.
