The Southern Africa Media Summit, taking place on 15–16 October 2025 in Harare, Zimbabwe, will centre on strengthening independent journalism for democracy and nation building.

In a climate where press freedom is increasingly under threat, this high-level regional convening offers a timely platform for journalists, civil society leaders, legal experts, and policymakers to come together. The aim is to foster meaningful dialogue, build partnerships, and develop concrete strategies that safeguard the independence and integrity of journalism across Southern Africa. Harare, long a site of media struggle and resilience sets the stage for urgent conversations on how the media can contribute to democratic renewal, national identity, and regional solidarity.

Press Freedom

Save the media: No press, no freedom

The summit forms part of the wider Save The Media campaign, an African-led movement defending the rights of journalists and media houses. Under the banner #NoPressNoFreedom, the campaign calls attention to the rising threats facing independent media and urges collective action to push back against censorship, intimidation, and disinformation. Follow and join the conversation on social media using #SaveTheMedia and #NoPressNoFreedom to learn more and share your voice.

Why it matters
