In the Philippines, talking openly about important topics like freedom, social justice, liberalism and democracy is more than just a tradition but a necessity. These values should be at core of our communities. But in times when political tensions rise or when people feel unheard, these conversations become even more important.  This is why the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) Philippines continues to invest in platforms where such discussions can take place.

One of the key projects which helps in opening up these discussions is a publication titled Plaza Miranda. This quarterly magazine is produced in partnership with the Center for Liberalism and Democracy (CLD), a think tank that focuses on liberal values. Together, they aim to promote thoughtful dialogue through the magazine, which covers a wide range of issues from human rights to sustainable development.

The first issue of Plaza Miranda for 2025 highlights several important topics that are close to the hearts of many liberals in the country. At the center of this issue is a speech by Congressman Erin Tañada, delivered during the 79th anniversary celebration of the Liberal Party. The speech touches on the party's past, present, and its hopes for the future.

Also featured is the newly updated General Program of Action for 2024–2028, which lays out the party’s goals and plans in the years ahead. The issue includes moving tributes from party members and friends for the late Hon. Edcel Lagman Sr., a respected figure in Philippine politics known for his unwavering commitment to democracy and human rights.

Readers will also get to know more about Mamamayang Liberal, a movement born out of the Liberal Party that continues to grow today. Finally, the issue shares the full text of Senator Kiko Pangilinan’s speech as he announced his candidacy for the 2025 Senate elections.

Each article is a window into the evolving landscape of liberal thought in the Philippines. For anyone interested in political ideas, civic engagement, or simply understanding the people behind today’s liberal movement, Plaza Miranda offers valuable insight.
