Jordan’s Throne Speech Reaches Beyond Borders.
Amman, 26 October 2025 – In his annual speech marking the opening of the 20th Jordanian Parliament’s second ordinary session, His Majesty King Abdullah II went beyond calling for domestic reforms, emphasizing Jordan’s vital role in the region. This speech aligns with the longstanding strategic relations between Jordan and Germany, which span decades and are anchored in tangible partnerships across multiple sectors.
A Partnership Rooted in Trust
The story of Jordan and Germany’s partnership stretches over seven decades. In 2023, the two nations celebrated 70 years of diplomatic relations, a milestone that reflects not only longevity but the depth of collaboration. Germany stands as Jordan’s second-largest bilateral donor after the United States, providing roughly €619 million in development aid for 2024–2025. These resources support Jordan’s economic modernization, public sector reform, and response to the Syrian crisis.

Partnership, as the King noted, is not only about words but results. Across the Kingdom, German-backed initiatives are transforming communities. The “Employment through Local Entrepreneurship” project, funded with €35 million from the German Development Bank (KfW), is equipping local communities with tools and opportunities to generate sustainable livelihoods. Similarly, Germany’s €80 million investment in the National Water Carrier project, linking Aqaba to Amman, provides the Kingdom with a lifeline of desalinated water—a strategic project essential for both growth and daily life.
Building Civic Engagement and Empowering Society
Yet the German partnership extends beyond infrastructure and development. Organizations such as the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) play a pivotal role in strengthening civic education and civil society in Jordan. By promoting youth leadership, supporting political awareness, and facilitating community participation in governance, FNF nurtures a culture of democratic engagement. Workshops, mentorship programs, and dialogue events empower Jordanians to actively shape their society, reinforcing the Kingdom’s long-term stability and progressive reform agenda.

A Pillar of Stability Amid Regional Turbulence
Jordan’s resilience is not confined within its borders. Germany regards the Kingdom as a cornerstone of regional stability, demonstrated through Jordan’s management of humanitarian crises. Hosting over one million Syrian refugees and providing aid to vulnerable areas, including Gaza, Jordan exemplifies leadership amid complexity. In a recent initiative, Germany coordinated humanitarian assistance to Gaza, facilitated by Jordan’s logistical support via its airbase.
A Call for Reform and Shared Progress
In his speech, King Abdullah II reminded his nation and the international community that Jordan’s journey toward reform is ongoing and requires sustained effort. The message resonates strongly with Germany’s support, which emphasizes practical cooperation, trust, and long-term commitment to development, governance, and civic engagement.
Looking Ahead: A Partnership for the Future
The Jordan-Germany relationship is more than diplomacy—it is a story of shared vision, concrete action, and enduring trust. Amid regional challenges, Jordan continues to demonstrate adaptability and leadership, while German organizations, particularly FNF, ensure that civic participation and democratic values remain central to the Kingdom’s progress. Strengthening this partnership promises not only stability and growth but a model of collaboration that bridges nations, communities, and generations.
