AHLN ExCom and 6th Assembly Shape Network’s Future
The Arab Liberal Network (AHLN) convened its 11th Executive Committee Meeting and 6th General Assembly on 19–20 September in Amman, Jordan. The gatherings brought together members, partners, and observers to review progress, discuss strategic priorities, and outline the liberal Network’s role in a rapidly changing regional context.
The Executive Committee meeting focused on the upcoming year’s roadmap, confirming the agenda for 2025, preparing for the General Assembly, and considering long-term priorities. Discussions highlighted the need to strengthen AHLN’s international visibility, deepen partnerships with regional think tanks such as the Ibn Khaldoun Center and Mouvement Populaire, and identify a unifying theme for the 2026 agenda. Issues of finance, resources, and membership growth were addressed, underscoring AHLN’s ambition to play a more prominent role in shaping liberal discourse in the MENA region.
The General Assembly, on 20 September, opened with remarks by AHLN President Myrna Mneimneh, emphasizing the importance of resilience and continuity in light of regional instability. "Our network has grown remarkably in recent years, and its value lies in bringing together both political parties and civil society. While tensions may exist, this collaboration is vital; political parties make the decisions, but they need the insights and support of NGOs. With our partners, we are committed to fostering dialogue, easing divisions, and advancing peace and cooperation across the region."Jörg Dehnert
The Assembly reviewed AHLN’s achievements to date and assessed ongoing initiatives in youth engagement, women’s empowerment, communication, and financial planning. "This meeting provides a crucial platform to share ideas and perspectives on our collective role in tackling common challenges. The AHLN is dedicated to advancing individual liberties across the Middle East and North Africa, promoting liberal values, and strengthening civil society in the region." Ayah Al Majali Expert contributions from across the region added depth to discussions on the future role of liberal think tanks.
Membership expansion was a central topic, with new applications presented from Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, and the Palestinian Territories. Observers from other countries shared perspectives on their engagement with AHLN, reinforcing AHLN’s role as a platform for regional exchange.
Resolutions formed another key outcome of the Assembly. Proposals included one from Lebanon’s Future Movement concerning the 2026 parliamentary elections and another from Morocco’s Popular Movement addressing peace, coexistence, and universal values in the region. In addition, Vice President Yamen Akkari introduced a Political Declaration on Liberalism, reaffirming AHLN’s commitment to its core principles.
A new initiative, the AHLN Prize for Liberalism in MENA, was launched during the Assembly. The award seeks to recognize individuals and organizations advancing liberal values under challenging conditions, further anchoring AHLN’s mission in practical action.
The Assembly concluded with the adoption of resolutions, confirmation of new members, and the announcement of the 2026 theme and next meeting’s host location. The two days in Amman reaffirmed AHLN’s commitment to advancing liberal values and enhancing cooperation among its members across the MENA region.
