In a global scenario that is increasingly interconnected and complex, the social, economic and political challenges faced by societies require innovative and collaborative solutions. In this context, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) emerge as essential actors in the search for a transformation that generates better living conditions for all citizens. The documentary “The Role of Civil Society in Mexico: Transparency, Human Rights and Citizen´s Participation” produced by Sarape Films and FNF Mexico, delves into the crucial role played by these organizations in Mexico, exploring their history, their achievements and the challenges they have faced in an environment that is often adverse to them.

The Nature of CSOs

CSOs are comprised by a group of people who work together for a common goal: seek solutions to public problems and improve the living conditions of the most disadvantaged groups at the local, national, regional and global levels. These organizations are fundamental in addressing issues that affect society, from poverty and inequality to lack of access to economic, social, cultural and environmental rights. Their existence in Mexico is supported by the Constitution, which guarantees freedom of association and the right to seek better opportunities in community.

A brief history of CSOs in a “young” democracy

Throughout Mexico's history, CSOs have played a vital role at decisive moments. From their participation in the organization of elections to their involvement in initiatives to combat corruption, insecurity and promote gender equality, these organizations have proven to be significant agents of change. For example, CSOs were instrumental in the implementation of laws such as the General Law of Transparency, which seeks to guarantee access to public information and foster a culture of accountability by exposing or reducing corruption. This law is now crucial for all developments in technology and use of artificial intelligence.

The new challenges

Around the world CSOs face a series of challenges that threaten their functioning and effectiveness. Lack of visibility and the scarcity of funding, which has worsened following the disappearance of USAID, are some of the most significant obstacles; many organizations depend on international funds that have been affected by changes in global policies. In addition, in Mexico, CSOs also face prosecution and attacks on their physical and moral integrity.

However, despite these adversities, CSOs have demonstrated admirable resilience. Their ability to adapt and evolve has been fundamental to strengthening democracy in Mexico. This documentary not only highlights their achievements and contributions, but also gives visibility to the importance of government recognition of these organizations as legitimate agents of social change.

The Fundamental Role of Women

Another key aspect explored in the documentary is the preponderant role of women in CSOs. According to figures from Sin Fronteras IAP, 80% of these organizations are led by women, demonstrating how their empathy and commitment have been essential in advancing women's rights and participation in all spheres. Women have not only driven significant social initiatives, but have also been pioneers in the fight for equality and justice within the civil sector. Without their tireless work, progress towards gender equality would have been much slower and even non-existent.

Resilience and Evolution

It is essential to recognize that without active CSOs it would be very difficult to build a better country and speak of a true democracy. The collective voice they represent is essential to ensure that all citizens are heard in the democratic process. Strengthening civil society is not only a necessity, it is an invaluable opportunity to innovate, solve public problems and increase the country's development.
