The Global Themes Division is the globally connected think tank of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom. It develops innovative policy recommendations and liberal solutions in the areas that will have a decisive impact on the future of free societies in a global context: Human rights and international rule of law; globalization, free trade and market economy; comprehensive approach and defence policy; digitalization and innovation. The team also organizes and coordinates the International Journalists' and Media Dialogue Programme.
The work of the Foundation's globally connected think tank is fed and inspired by the Foundation's international projects and the expertise and thematic networks of its employees. The networking approach of the Global Themes Division is complemented by the networks of the Foundation's global expertise hubs. The Global Themes Division coordinates its work with the Global Security Hub (Brussels), the World Order and Globalization Hub (Washington, D.C.), the Global Innovation Hub (Taipei), the Global Partnership Hub (Nairobi) and the Human Rights Hub (Geneva).
Global Security Hub, Brussels
Since 2017, the Global Security Hub has been the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom's central point of contact for all security and defence-related activities. Together with the Liberal Defence Expert Network, it brings together a broad network of policy advisors and think tank experts from across Europe and beyond.
World Order and Globalization Hub, Washington
The World Order and Globalization Hub in Washington, D.C., has been the central collaboration platform for all topics relating to globalization and the global economy since 2017. The Hub promotes exchange between multipliers from politics, business and academia and brings together groups from the Foundation's partner network to develop liberal positions and responses to the strategic challenges of this area.
Global Innovation Hub, Taipei
The Global Innovation Hub of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom was reopened in Taipei in 2021. The hub focuses on the topics of "Digital Transformation" and "Innovation for Democracy". With an international network of experts, the hub supports the Foundation as a creative innovation platform for liberalism.
Global Partnership Hub, Nairobi
Since 2021, the Global Partnership Hub in Nairobi has been dedicated to developing concepts for global development cooperation between partners on an equal footing. The Hub's work focuses on global trends, a new division of labour between the Global North and South and the role of increasing systemic competition.
Human Rights Hub, Geneva
In 2023, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom established a Human Rights Hub in Geneva. As a hub for the Foundation's human rights work, it strengthens respect for and compliance with human rights and promotes the rules-based international legal order. The hub will connect human rights defenders and civil society organizations with each other and with UN organizations in Geneva.
International Journalists' and Media Dialogue Programme (IJMD)
The IJMD creates spaces for dialogue and mutual learning for journalists and media professionals who are persecuted and threatened in their home countries or are in exile due to the repressive situation or an armed conflict. Specialist publications, media dialogue measures and study trips by specialist groups are further components of the program.
