With “Mate mit Hans-Dieter”, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, together with the Argentinisches Tageblatt, is launching a new German-language podcast format from Buenos Aires. In short episodes of around five minutes, current political and economic reform topics from Argentina and Germany are explained in a clear, concise and accessible way, from a liberal perspective. The first episode focuses on a topic that affects nearly everyone in Argentina: the deregulation of the mate market under the presidency of Javier Milei.

The podcast is hosted by Hans-Dieter Holtzmann and moderated by Carolina Iglesias from the Argentinisches Tageblatt. The format is produced in the new podcast studio of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom in Buenos Aires. The aim of the series is to offer German-speaking listeners direct insight into Argentina’s political and economic transformations: approachable, informative and grounded in local context.

Argentinische Tageblatt

In line with the title of the series, the first episode addresses Argentina’s national drink: mate. For more than two decades, the market was regulated by the state-run National Institute of Yerba Mate (Instituto Nacional de la Yerba Mate, INYM), which set prices and controlled production volumes. As part of the deregulation agenda promoted by the Milei administration, this centralized state system of price and quantity controls was lifted at the end of 2023. Since then, prices have been negotiated directly between producers and buyers. The INYM continues to exist, but now focuses more strongly on other tasks, such as quality control and market promotion.

Through the case of the mate market, the podcast episode illustrates the concrete effects that economic liberalization can have. Since the removal of state price-setting, mate prices have fallen significantly, by more than 40%, providing direct relief to consumers. At the same time, producers have had to adapt to new market conditions. Many, however, have used the reform as an opportunity to expand production and access new export markets. Argentina has now even overtaken Brazil as the world’s largest exporter of yerba mate.

With “Mate mit Hans-Dieter”, the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom and the Argentinisches Tageblatt are creating an innovative format for everyone interested in Argentina, economic reforms and liberal ideas. The first episode makes clear that even a traditional product such as mate can become a symbol of the country’s economic transformation.
