Make it Happen: Human Rights at a Local Level

Human rights city is a concept aimed at promoting and protecting human rights at the level of local government and community. The human rights city initiative urges a city to commit to upholding international human rights standards in its policies and practices, and also involves grassroots organizations and residents to work together in fostering human rights in their communities.
This paper by Dr. Chayanit Poonyarat from Peace Information Center, Thammasat University explores the concept of human rights city initiatives, especially in the context of Thailand where the initiatives have been implemented in two cities. The human rights city initiatives were launched in Ubon Ratchathani (2023), and Khon Kaen (2024) through a collaboration between FNF Thailand, Thailand’s National Human Rights Commission, and civil society organizations.
This paper suggests each human rights city initiative emerges from different historical contexts, tailoring strategies to reflect diverse factors is essential for fostering successful human rights cities.
