Women Up Democracy Conference

This conference aims to bring together female politicians and aspiring political leaders from Thailand, the Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, and Indonesia to share experiences and create best practices. By addressing these challenges collectively, we can chart a path forward for greater female political empowerment in the region.

Our Goals: 

  1. Highlight Current Challenges: Examine and discuss the current situation of women in politics in Southeast and East Asia. Identify and analyze the obstacles that female politicians face in these regions.
  2. Facilitate Networking and Mentorship: Create a platform for networking and mentorship, enabling female politicians and aspiring political leaders to connect, share experiences, and learn from each other.

  •  Date: 28th of October
  •  Duration: One-day event
  •  Location: Chatrium Grand Bangkok, Thailand.
  •  Participants: Around 100 participants, including politicians, activists, civil society, scholars, and students from Southeast and East Asia

The conference will be divided into two main sessions:


Morning Session:

  • Opening Remarks: Thekla Ebbert
  • Welcoming Remarks: Katchada Prommachan
  • Video Keynote Speech: Leila De Lima, Spokesperson, Liberal Party of the Philippines Former Senator, Republic of the Philippines
  • Panel Discussion: A session with prominent women leaders sharing personal stories, common challenges, mutual support strategies, mental-resilience tools, and envisioning a more gender-equitable political landscape.

Afternoon Session:
World Democracy Café
This interactive session will feature five discussion tables on the following topics:

  • Mentorship and Networking for Female Politicians
  • Combatting Gender-Based Violence in Politics
  • Work-life Balance in Political Careers
  • Media Representation of Women Politicians
  • Advancing Gender-sensitive Policies

Each table will have a facilitator to guide the discussion. Participants will engage in discussions at three different tables of their choice. We will use the three-horizon approach to guide the discussion. After the rotations, facilitators will present a summary of each table's discussion.

Our goal:

  • Increased Awareness: A deeper understanding of the specific challenges faced by female politicians in Southeast and East Asia.
  • Enhanced Networks: Strengthened connections among female politicians and aspiring leaders in the region.
  • Action Plan: Development of strategies and action plans to address and overcome the identified challenges.

The ‘Women-Up Democracy’ conference is a pivotal step toward understanding and addressing the unique obstacles faced by female politicians in Southeast and East Asia. Through dialogue, networking, and mentorship, this event aims to empower women to take on leadership roles and drive positive change in their communities and countries.
