The European Union stands as a prominent advocate for LGBTQIA+ rights globally, evidenced by notable advancements in legal frameworks and societal attitudes across Europe. Despite these strides, internal cohesion within member states on LGBTQIA+ issues remains elusive. The EU's progressive stance, predominantly championed by the Commission and the Parliament, contrasts starkly with the conservative sentiments prevalent in the South and East of Europe, widening the acceptance gap. Furthermore, beyond the EU's borders, numerous European countries such as Poland pose significant challenges to LGBTQIA+ individuals, with instances of discrimination and even life-threatening conditions.
Europe's purported image as a sanctuary for LGBTQIA+ individuals contradicts the complex reality wherein disparities exist across the continent. Notably, no single country guarantees comprehensive protection and equality for the LGBTQIA+ community. Moreover, even where legal safeguards are in place, inadequate implementation leaves individuals vulnerable to discrimination in daily life.
Recent years have witnessed both progress and regression in LGBTQIA+ rights across Europe, marked by heightened political repression, the proliferation of LGBTQIA+-phobic sentiments, and legislative setbacks.
This paper aims to highlight key trends influencing LGBTQIA+ rights, focusing on the rise of anti-LGBTQIA+ right-wing populism, hate speech and hate crime, Trans rights, and migration and asylum issues. By providing insights into these trends, policymakers, activists, and commentators can better understand the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ communities, identify opportunities for advocacy, and address threats to their well-being and rights.
