Towards a self-sustainable model for the Right to Information

In Bangladesh, the Right to Information (RTI) Act of 2009 ensures people’s right to free flow of information. This is a big step towards transparency and accountability of governmental institutions. To empower the citizens to fully understand RTI, the Information Commission of Bangladesh (ICB) has launched a new initiative to educate senior officers from various ministries as RTI trainers.

The aim is to organize a series of Training of Trainers or TOT - workshops to enhance the active involvement of public officers in implementing the RTI Act across the country. The Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF Bangladesh) is actively supporting this cause by co-supporting dialogues between key stakeholders.

“This approach to develop trainers will further accelerate the implementation of the RTI law within all public organizations”, says FNF Bangladesh’s Country Representative Dr. Najmul Hossain, who himself has taken an active role in the workshops. The feedback from the trainers will be crucial for ICB in determining the efficiency of this new initiative. The idea is to train officers at the ministry level and to thereby produce more trainers without direct involvement of the ICB. FNF Bangladesh’s Dr. Hossain says, “We anticipate this as a self-sustainable model for RTI implementation within the public sector of Bangladesh.”
