Sam Matekane sworn in as Lesotho's New Prime Minister

Businessman turned politician, once named Forbes businessman of the year in Africa, was inaugurated on 28 October 2022. The new prime minister of Lesotho’s Prosperity party, formed earlier this year, won the 7 October elections but failed to garner an outright majority. A new coalition government had to be formed with other parties. None of Lesotho's political parties has garnered enough votes to form a government of their own for more than a decade. No prime minister has served a full five-year term. There has been political instability since 2012, including a coup in 2014 and three national elections in five years.
