French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Cameroon to start of a three-nation tour of western Africa. The first trip of his new term outside Europe also takes him to Benin and Guinea-Bissau in the effort to reestablish relations in west Africa. France’s influence in Africa has reportedly been declining in the face of China, India and Germany, particularly in the economic and commercial sectors. The three countries have however been called out by activists over their below par human rights records. It is expected that governance and rights issues will be raised, “without media noise but in the form of direct exchanges between the heads of states”.
