Freedom Dialogue : Freedom Dialogue - Freedom in Conversation

The Freedom Dialogue Series, initiated by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom (FNF) in Sub-Saharan Africa, is a flagship platform for timely, honest, and impactful conversations on Africa’s democratic and developmental future. Rooted in liberal values and political openness, the series aims to convene diverse voices to reflect on complex challenges, exchange solutions, and inspire practical change.

The sessions aim to explore themes around governance and anti-corruption, media freedom, innovation and technology, youth empowerment, and climate resilience, with a strong focus on inclusion, policy relevance, and African agency.

Past dialogues have featured influential political leaders and thought leaders including:

  • Dr Mpho Phalatse, former Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, discussing the fragility of coalition governments in South African metros

  • Helen Zille, Chair of the Democratic Alliance Federal Council, on the unprecedented formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU)

  • Fikile Mbalula, ANC Secretary-General, engaging on the ANC's role in a post-majority era

  • Moeletsi Mbeki, Mmusi Maimane, and Mbali Ntuli, in a candid discussion on whether democracy is failing South Africans, moderated by renowned journalist Ferial Haffajee

By blending high-level political engagement with grassroots perspectives, the series encourages not just dialogue, but action. With expert panels, one-on-one conversations, policy briefs, and public engagement, the Freedom Dialogue Series is building a network of change agents committed to a freer, more just, and democratic Africa.
