The Liberal Workshop of the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for Freedom, based in Cape Town has reached out to comedians to help strengthen liberal democracy and achieve the objectives of the Foundation. Comedians such as Carvin H. Goldstone (SA Comedian of the year 2018 - a title he shares with the likes of Trevor Noah) and friends have collaborated with the Foundation on campaigns aiming to highlight the importance of political participation in South Africa, especially by the youth.
The FNF Board of Directors strongly condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine. "Russia's actions are also an attack on the European security order. Putin alone is responsible for the human suffering. The Russian invasion of Ukraine will find a common response in solidarity with Ukraine," we say. South Africa is among the countries that abstained in the UN vote against Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine. However, South Africans see things quite differently from their government. While the South African government plays politics, the number of Ukrainian refugees are increasing and all forms of support from the international community are being welcomed.
“Mad About Comedy” has responded to the refugee crisis by forming an international alliance of comedy promoters and comedians. As a collective, they are raising awareness and money to help refugees fleeing Ukraine. Fundraising events have already been organised all over Europe, Asia and North America with more to come. In South Africa, comedian and activist, Carvin H. Goldstone are flying the “Mad About Comedy” organising events in Pretoria and Cape Town to raise support for the Gift of the Givers Foundation who are providing humanitarian aid to refugees in Ukraine. South African comedians will perform in solidarity with fellow comedian Volodimir Selentsky, the Ukranian president. South African comedians are also setting an example in their own country against human rights violations, war and violence.
