John Nery

John Nery is a journalist in the Philippines.
He is an opinion columnist at the Philippine Daily Inquirer, board chair of the Asian Center for Journalism at the Ateneo de Manila University, and convenor of the Consortium on Democracy and Disinformation—a nationwide network of journalists, academics, and civil society representatives. He also serves on the board of directors of the Washington, DC-based World Justice Project.
He served as a senior editor at the Inquirer, the largest newspaper in the Philippines, from 2001 to 2018. From August 2014 to May 2017 he acted in a concurrent capacity as editor in chief of INQUIRER.net, one of the country’s leading websites. He represented the Inquirer on the executive board of the Asia News Network from 2014 to 2018.
His work has received national and international recognition. He was a Nieman Fellow in journalism in Harvard University, a Jefferson Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu, and a visiting research fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) in Singapore. He is the author of “Revolutionary Spirit: Jose Rizal in Southeast Asia,” published by ISEAS in Singapore and by the Ateneo de Manila University Press in the Philippines. In 2019, John was a recipient of the Freedom Flame Award from the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.
